Spring In Corfu. The beaches may not be open, but the countryside is humming

leave a comment »

For anyone sat at home in the UK or elsewhere, wondering why it’s still raining in Spring and planning their summer holiday, then why not think a little more laterally next time the Easter holidays are approaching or, even better, just after they’ve finished.

Although Corfu may be best known for its beaches and azure blue seas, what placed it firmly on the map some years ago were the wonderful Durrell stories based somewhat around the nature and wildlife that fills the island.

In Old Perithia (Ano Peritheia) northeast of the island and nestling beneath Corfu’s highest mountain, Mount Pantokrator, is a Heritage Protected Village in A Designated Area of Natural Beauty – and, although it’s only 15 minutes from the beach, ideal for when the summer really sets in, in spring this 14th century gem of Venetian village architecture is bursting with the best that mother nature has to offer.

The butterflies appear in their hundreds, birds tweet, bees buzz about the place and locals can be seen wandering the mountains through the colourful wild flowers in search of ‘horta’ (wild greens to take home and cook) and for the trained eye, wild asparagus too. Dive into one of the village tavernas and eat fresh ‘from the mountain to your table.’

You can stay in the one 4 star boutique b&b in the village, The Merchant’s House, a faithfully restored row of three houses, dating back to 1650 and built entirely by hand, using the same methods that were employed all that time ago.

As you sit on the terrace and listen to the sounds of the Ionian night descending over the clear skies above the mountains, you’ll soon forget about the rain back home and fall asleep dreaming of the next day’s walk and simply getting back to nature. It’s still not too late, Easter in Corfu is in early May this year…

EPISODE 2, ITV1 Thursday, 18th October 22.35 GMT

Billing:

Director|Producer Peter Beard – Series Director|Producer Matt Pelly – A Century Films Production

Corfu is buzzing. 500,000 Brits fly there each summer and around 10,000 of us have even chosen to live there. It is the Greek holiday island of choice for many British holidaymakers, and we easily out-number every other nationality holidaying on the island.
This week we meet more Brits who have fallen for the charms of this alluring island.
Marcus sells and develops multimillion pound, beachfront properties. He’s profiting from Corfu’s shift in industry from the agriculture that dominated the economy up until the 60’s, to tourism today. But as the island grows more popular it is becoming increasingly difficult to track down the picture-perfect plot.
Marcus’s most recent client is Oxfordshire housewife Susie who, along with husband Mark, has scoured Corfu for the perfect retreat from the stresses of life in the UK.
Further inland in the shadow of the “The Almighty”, Mount Pantokrator, lies a village where one couple are trying to reinvigorate the old ways. Mark Hendriksen and his Dutch wife Saskia Bosch fell in love with the abandoned village of Old Perithia while on holiday. The pair have now started an ambitious project to breathe life back into the idyll, and the first step is to get their Boutique B&B up and running.

Press Release: For immediate release

Boutique and Unique: The Merchant’s House B&B is now open in Old Perithia, Corfu’s Oldest Village, a protected heritage site

22.08.2012 — Within Corfu’s historic village of Old Perithia, The Merchant’s House (circa 1650), is a privately owned and managed four star boutique B&B designed and restored by Mark Hendriksen and Saskia Bosch, offering suites and breakfast with a difference.

The Merchant’s House captures the history of Corfu within six individual, luxury suites, each with their own separate entrance, hand-made furniture, lavish furnishings, antiques and paintings, comfy beds, power showers, BeeKind™ toiletries, Nespresso machines and all the techy stuff that’s required.

A touch of luxury combined with a homely charm, set in what is undoubtedly the most peaceful spot on the island. This highly acclaimed restoration, the first of its kind on Corfu, is one of the reasons it has become the most photographed house on the island. Though the village is buzzing during the day, at night it falls silent with only the gentle hum of the tavernas accompanied by a melody of hooting owls.

Breakfast is served at the adjoining taverna Ognistra, and for lunch or dinner there are five traditional tavernas all within two minutes walk of The Merchant’s House.

Some of the island’s most stunning beaches are within 15-25 minutes drive from the village. Alternatively, leave the hustle and bustle of the coast behind and head up the mountain in search of the cool, air-conditioned suites, and enjoy a drink on the private garden terrace before wandering off through the cobbled streets to dinner.

Suites start from 130 per night, including breakfast.

Planning a Honeymoon? How about a ‘Town & Country Escape’ in Corfu

It may be the most photographed house on Corfu, but The Merchant’s House Boutique B&B in Old Perithia continues to be one of the most unique places to stay, an exclusive accommodation in the oldest village on the island.

Old Perithia used to be a hideaway from pirate attacks, which blighted mountain villages and towns near to the coast. Old Perithia at 408m, located in the northeast corner of the island, nestles below Mount Pantokrator, 906m and the highest point on Corfu. We discovered it on one of our trips to the island and loved the clean mountain air, the spirit of the place, the mood and beauty of the landscape, the undisturbed charm of its houses and churches. The village had a few popular tavernas but nowhere to stay, and so…

During ‘a year in Corfu’, working closely with the archaeological department, we faithfully restored a row of mid 17th century ‘Merchant’s Houses’ in this protected heritage site. From Spring until Autumn, in an area of great natural beauty, we are open to guests who seek a unique, exclusive and atmospheric place to stay.

Stroll through the cobbled paths, admire the characteristic houses with their Venetian origins, explore the surrounding countryside, or enjoy the peace and quiet, rest and relaxation. The glorious beaches of the north east are just 20 minutes drive away.

In the evening we welcome you back to the gentle luxury of our boutique B&B where, resting on our terrace beneath unpolluted night skies, you can listen to the sounds of the Ionian night as it settles over the hills.

From our own ‘honeymoon’ experience we also highly recommend our ‘Town & Country Escape’ where you can spend a relaxing time unwinding after your wedding, and then soak up the culture and cuisine in Corfu town, whilst staying at the charming Hotel Bella Venezia.
